I was reminded of this by the "mouthing of on the tube" thread.
About 6 months ago when trying to get a ticket for the DLR at lewisham, I put a £10 note in and the machine didn't accept it but refused to give it back.
I was with my ex at the time who said "hang on a minute".
He fiddled around under the slot where it should have come back out and pulled out a rolled up train ticket, immediately my £10 came back out.
I was amazed. He said that he had once seen some little shit putting them in and said that it backs up several notes so when they come back after the trains have finished they pull the tickets out, they get a free £40-£50!!
I don't know what other machines this works with but I have since had this happen again to me and myself removed the offending ticket and got my money back.
If you get in the same situation, id always try checking the out slot, it may take a bit of fishing about. I always check even if i am paying in change because i don't want this to happen to any one else, although always a little worried that the person that put it there may be watching.
