There is a rumour.....

going around these parts, that somebody has been attacked with a machete (possibly dead?) down at Camberwell Green.

Anyone know any more?

http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005380044,00.html

a 39 year old man was stabbed from behind with an 18" blade at about 5.15pm, and died shortly after arriving at hospital according to that story.

Though I'd rather a beeb (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4157628.stm) link than the friggin Sun.

That's the second fatal motiveless stabbing outside that McDonalds in as many years.

Are there any rumours as to why?

About twenty years ago a friend was stabbed in the back walking along Sydenham High Street.. though as he weighs about 20 stone he just thought someone had patted him on the back. It was only the fact that people were giving him funny looks that he realised he had a knife sticking out of him. The police said it was local gangs having to prove themselves by stabbing a random person.

It seems that this guy was on his own so maybe it is another 'care in the community' attack. The reports claim the victim was a cyclist. Was he riding his bike at the time? It would be difficult to attack someone repeatedly if they were moving.

It's fairly easy to knock someone off a bike with the first blow, I would imagine.

The news reports suggest that he ended up lying at the entrance to Butterfly Walk. Even after a struggle it is difficult to see how he would have got there from the middle of the road, as at that time of day there are usually two or three buses stopped outside McShite/Butterfly Walk.

I suspect he was on foot wearing cycling gear when he was attacked, hence the 'cyclist' tag.

Whatever happened it is not good. Condolences to his wife and family.

I don't want to speculate about this being gang motivated, however, in the case of my friend, he was also attacked by one person on his own.

I know that ....

they are both horrific, but there is a difference between a gee'd up kid sticking a knife in someone to 'prove him or herself' to their mates, and someone who carries out a frenzied attack on someone with a machete which leaves them dead.

They should both be in jail, but the latter should probably never be let out again.

There's plenty of paranoid schizophrenics with violent histories that are recieving treatment from the Maudsley Hospital in Camberwell. Also seems to be a fair share of exteremly desperate junkies around there too. It's no surprise really, but still rather sad that something like this happens every now and then. :(

Just seen a ....

photo of the guy (Mark Byers) on the BBC website. A face I know well. It shows how vulnerable we all are. It could have been anyone of us.

R.I.P
