Heading off up there tonight, just for a day and a bit but was wondering if anyone had any tips as to what parts of the city were worth seeing? Meeting friends at some point, but I'll be alone for half a day or so, not really looking for anything in particular, just nice places to wander to and sit in. Anything I should know about the city? Any tips on not getting stabbed in the face? I'd ask in the Scotland forum, but I thought I'd get a better response in here.

Thanks in advance.

West End is always nice, I can recommend Tchai-Ovna on Otago Lane as a great place to sit and chill (lovely shishas too). Kelvingrove park is nice to wander through and should be fine during the day, good views of the Uni as well from there.

The Science museum is a fun way to waste a few hours, or the Gallery of Modern Art if you're feeling pretentious :)

Dunno if you're into architecture, thats why a lot of people come up here, MacIntoshs and 'Greek' Thompsons work are well renouned - the Art School (macintosh) and the church on st. vincent st. (thompson) are good if you dont want to go out the city centre. Could get the underground to Ashton lane (Hillhead) which is by Glagow uni which is nice with lots of museums inside. Try and sneek into the anatomy msueum, its for students only but its worth seeing several of every body part pickled in a jar.

a born and bred glaswegian woman once told me that banks over there are being turned into pubs....

true actually, lots of nice old finacial buildings are now boozers as the banks moved into ugly, cost effect buildings.

The most spectacular, but most pretensious, is The Corinthian. Its where big wigs and footballers go for a drink. Go in, walk around, then leave.

There used to be a funky fringe theatre under the railway arches somewhere. My memories of Glasgae are a little sketch as I was pissed the entire time I lived there.

 never heard of it, how long ago did you live here? The Arches (night club) is known to put on plays, fashion shows, and the odd film but only a hand full of times a year.

I always reckon it's best to avoid the tourist traps and do what the locals do. And that's why every time I'm in Glasgow, I inject heroin and beat up my wife.

Finally, a plausible suggestion :p

Thanks for the thoughts, folks, I'll grab a map when I arrive, see what's in walking distance, get lost and end up sitting in a pub all day ;)

All most appreciated.

The Embassy club doesn't know what it's missing. Crude outdated sterotypes. Cutting edge.

All the bite of Andy cap crossed with the narrative flow of that m/c one in the express...

Sadly the art galleries are closed :( for refurbishment. But if you are only in Glasgow a shortwhile the West End is nice a bit poncey though but it will leave you with a nice image of Glasgow. :D

Well, I'll be arriving at Buchanan Bus Station, at 9am tomorrow, then I've got half a day to kill, is that a good place to be walking from? Or is it miles away from the West End?

It would kill an hour, walk down Sauchiehall Street and don't stop til it looks nice.

The art galleries are closed, but some stuff is on show at the McLellan (I just know I've spelled that wrong) which you can pop into as you wander down Sauchiehall St.

If it's nice, definately wander round Kelvinbridge park and the botanic gardens.

Sadly Glasgow apert from parks isnt great during the day but has great nightlife and pubs. A bit like Brixton in a way nothing much touristy but good social scene. Erm also you need to see the Statue in Exchange Square with some old toff think its the Duke of Wellington on a horse with a traffic cone stuck in on his head :D

No - that's in an old tram depot and was the venue for my weirdest ever theatre visit. Went to see some cult company called La Fura del Baus and spent the evening running away from performers who were freaking the crowd right out. It involved a man masturbating with a raw chicken, copious nudity, cigar smoking  , spitting white stuff all over each other/the crowd etc etc :)

Bit like seeing Vulva and Hoover in Spaced, except these guys were well serious about it.

The Arches now uses most of the spaces pretty regularly - they have a bar/exhibition space that you get into from the Argyle street side.

The clubbing is good but if the galleries are shut then wandering in the west end is probably the best bet or you'll just end up shopping in town and haemorrhaging cash ;)

You can walk from Buchanan street station up Sauchiehall st and along the Great Western Road to the west end - I used to quite like that wander myself and I did it a lot in varying states of mind...

Surprised no one has mentioned the People's Palace (http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/index.cfm?venueid=9) or were you all scarred for life by compulsory visits as schoolkids?

Sadly the art galleries are closed :( for refurbishment.
Kelvingrove is closed til next year, but they've got 120 paintings* on
temporary show at the McLellan Galleries (http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/showExhibition.cfm?venueid=4&itemid=2) in Sauchiehall Street - well worth a look if you're stuck in Glasgae on a wet day.

* The most famous French impressionist pics from the collection are exiled in Kirkcudbright (http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/showExhibition.cfm?venueid=4&itemid=92) until the end of August following their American tour, and won't be on show again until Kelvingrove reopens

And as mentioned, even closer to the centre of town there is the Gallery of Modern Art (http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/index.cfm?venueid=3) in Royal Exchange Square off Buchanan Street - IMHO the permanent collection is utter crap - but others may disagree. Temporary exhibitions have been hit and miss.

In Glasgow now, friend has, apparently, stood me up, going to start wandering down Sauchihall (spl?) Street until it 'looks nice' then I'm going to find somewhere to get serenely drunk. Any suggestions?

aw shit; didnt see this thread till now and i'm heading to work now;

if you're in the area of charing cross, which is at the end of the main bit of sauchihall st, the pakora shop on woodlands road is imo well worth a visit, specially for the broccoli and spinach stuff.

the parks are nice enough; i like the river too though youre prob heading away from the clyde; queens park's nice enough too but over the other side from the west end; i'm sure you'll find something decent to do.

Uisge Beatha on woodlands as well with its random stuffed animals all over the wall.

The moose above the bar is colossal.

As is the whisky selection.

yeah, i suppose that's nice enough; nice and warm in the winter. i like the big tables.
there's also the doublet at the end of woodlands road, come to think of it i probably prefer that to either of the others.

I think they've painted it purple or something now - I liked it's moth eaten edge personally. The Doublet's quite good too - not a patch on Clatty Patty's though ;)

The Bon Accord. Bottom of Sauchiehall Street & turn left. Its on the other side of the motorway. Probably Scotlands greatest collection/selection of real ales.
