View Full Version : "Travellers" and, err, "industry" night @ Dogstar?!
I can't even pretend to understand what's going on at the Dogstar these days - excellent, well attended popular nights like the Tuesday live jazz night has been cancelled and replaced by, err, nothing.
Regular local DJs have quietly been vanishing off the posters to be replaced by line-ups who never seem to materialise - I was there on Thursday for "Live Mcs, Open Mic, Djs, Producers, Live Acts And Singers - Hiphop, R&b. Soul" and there was just one DJ and an empty stage there.
But the flyer for tonight's offering has got me utterly baffled:
SERVED
Industry/travellers night
DJs, visua media, special guests etcWTF? How does an "industry/travellers night" work, then?
Do media types come over and give industry tips on marketing juggling skills or something?
Anyone got any ideas?

Industry/Travellers? Perhaps they'll tarmac my drive (well, if I had one).

I bet when they try and clear the bar at closing time the punters will get an injunction from a European Court that they are being discriminated against! "What will happen to Claaarm house prices?" shocker!
;)
i think that's the bar/pub industry they're talking about
i got an email once saying you could get cheap drinks if you proved that you worked in a bar or club
as for travellers...i presume they mean antipodeans

as for travellers...i presume they mean antipodeansWhy would bar workers and Antipodeans all want to get together in a Brixton DJ bar on a Monday night and listen to "live percussion"?!
:( Dear me...The Dogstar is heading the way of the old one and the one before that....
as for travellers...i presume they mean antipodeans(doublechecks flyer...)
Hang on: there's a picture of what looks like a whippet on the flyer which suggests that really are talking about crusty travellers!

well if thats true about the industry workers, then the traveler reference could refer to "Bone Fide travelers" who are entitled to "succour" at any inn or waystation (which i think the dog could be loosely said to include)
at least that was the case in 1926 when i was in my youth ;)

With all the horses and mules tied up and carriages parked outside the Dogstar tonight its going to be pandemonium at those crossroads :)
if its a cheap night for crusties, how will they tell the difference between those dressing down and some of the more usual pipe smoking clientelle ( :o i must get some new clothes)
(Checks the flyer again....) Eek! They're charging £1 after 10pm!!!
On a Monday?!
Apparently, once the travellers have moved on after the Monday, you can see some gypsies there on the Tuesday night!

Noticed today, whilst walking past, that the DogStar doesn't open till 4 in the afternoon during the week. Reduced opening hours are the first refuge of the cost-cutter.
Dunno about harlem. Always seems to be empty, or sparsely populated at best.
Serious question - is Brixton, erm, over?
If 'The Dogstar is crap' = 'Brixton is over', it's been over for sodding years apart from a few months' renaissance when it looked as though the Dogstar was raising it's game a bit.
I'll be really sorry if it lapses back into crapness, with or without a traveller/gypsy theme, but Brixton is not over for me...

editor - do you have an email where uninvolved but concerned Dogstar patrons could express their alarm about this sort of crap?

Haha! :D
Ah, y'know I fucked of out of Brixton years ago, in order to be at the forefront of the Herne Hill gentrification push. ;)
<mulls moving to Norbury>
innit - yeah I know what you mean. Weekday opening times probably not the greatest barometer..
