View Full Version : The Albert Renovations

just had a quick scroll through comments made..
The decking at the front of the albert was objected to by highways.. although the argument by Greene King was that
1. Its Greene Kings land
2. you are meant to leave a gap of 80cm from road to boundary. Greene King are leaving 1.5mt.
3. The local police are totally supportive of the scheme as it would show a drastic reduction in drug dealing on Coldharbour Lane.. also admitting that it would only be the cause of these guys to relocate elsewhere.. so the problem that was Coldharbour lanes is now someone elses!!! until our local constabulary get their act together.............
Real Ale... they are stocking Greene King I.P.A.. and are having 2 pump heads put in to cater for another monthly guest ale if the sales are good... also there might be a beer festival held there in October...
By the way it opens Friday at 7pm..... so they say

I've only just spotted the Jules Verne joke.
I thought it was Proust.
It may not be a place of worship but fuck me, we are missing it. I was having an in-depth conversaton with two of the most hardened members of the Albert diaspora in the Trinity last night. There, I must say, the bar staff at closing time and punters are just snotty. People look at you as if to say "who are you? What you doing in our pub?" You don't get that in the Albert. The Trinny crowd is a lot more conservative, small c.
I don't mean they're rugger buggers or anything. Like Mrs M I have no qualms about taking the paper to the pub and having a pint after work without feeling obliged to have arranged to meet someone. I mean, what century is this? But in the Trin I feel awkward doing that.
Donna Ferentes
16-08-2005, 12:35
I thought it was Proust.Isn't it from Around The World In Eighty Days?
As for the Trinity, wasn't it established that they've had NIMBY trouble and have had to be very careful as a result? that said, I do recall a couple of members of the bar staff who make a vitur out of necessity and don't seem to grasp that if you've handed them over two pound fifty at five to eleven, one of the conditions of them accepting your money is that you should get a decent chance to drink what you've paid for without attracting the attention of the Guinness Book Of Records.
As for reading in there, is there a problem? I happily read the LRB in there on a number of occasions.

The dayglo environment in the Albert is positively offputting for newspaper reading - and you're likely to be waylaid by a random nutter - I prefer to be left alone by people when I'm drinking, I'm not that keen on striking up conversations with local 'characters' - I guess this will mark me down as a yuppie with no interest in engaging with my community ;)

It's perfectly simple. I fear there may have been something after all in Zoe Williams's recent assertions about women alone in pubs, judging by the she's-no-better-than-she-should-be glances.
Either way, the Albert is a lot friendlier.
I think a lot of people consider many other Brixton pubgoers to be, in a nutshell, beneath them, whether they try to pre-empt that with "I suppose that makes me a yuppie, etc etc" or not. What is the worst that could happen? That someone might broaden their mind? That their trendy friends might see them talking to someone a bit off the wall or down and out? Heavens to Betsy!

Not at all - but if I'm on my own, it's for a reason.
I'm not the sort of person who enjoys talking to random people - I get all shy and tongue-tied and on the occasions I do get waylaid, it's invariably a conversation about sport :o

Doh! Only just realised you meant Zoe's column back in July (http://www.guardian.co.uk/Columnists/Column/0,5673,1528635,00.html), not her longer Grauniad article on the same day you posted that. (http://society.guardian.co.uk/drugsandalcohol/comment/0,8146,1549894,00.html)
I used to be fine going to the pub on my own, however was put off when the assumption was made on a couple of occassions that as a female alone in a pub I was clearly in the pub and gagging for it.:( However I found in London that my friends were not keen into going type of places I wanted to go to and so I'd go on my own, you get to talk to far more people than you would with a group of friends, you can dance and run away from freaks more easily, I've met some lovely friends with similar interests and my boyfriend on nights that I went out without companionship :)

What you never see or, if you're a woman yourself, never do is this: buy newspaper/puzzle magazine; stroll into nice looking pub; order solitary pint; sit down, drink it, leave. I would NEVER stay for just one pint.

I'm really impressed with what I've seen so far!
Pat (head newly shaven and dreamy tresses swept away ;) ) gave me a little tour... The garden is all one level, the colour scheme inside is muted, Old Pat's portrait now looks out onto CHL and her memorial plaque has been reinstated.
The place is full of workmen (they didn't dare get saucy with me, but I'm not as easy on the eye as PieEye). Pat is a little worried about the real ale because it didn't arrive till yesterday, and properly speaking shouldn't be drunk till Sunday, so it won't be as good as it should.
The disabled access is good considering the ramp is a little steep, but the pavement isn't wide enough to make it the ideal gradient. I had a quick look at the disabled loo but the workman-like controlled chaos made closer scrutiny impossible.
Roll on 7pm!

Forgot to mention the exterior. No longer livid orange, more of an apricot sludge. Very weird pub sign, imagine the Prince Consort with Cherubism viewed by someone using peyote. Lettering like a ransom demand, the deck looks good though and is raised, thus giving a psychological advantage to drinkers who may get hassled by CHL ne'er-do-wells.

Would that mean becoming no-smoking, as of whenever that comes in?

I am doing my best not to think about that  They don't call me Mrs Fagpie for nothing
the albert looks really nice from the outside now....nice balcony could be a good idea also to claim the street back to anyone else ...if that makes any sense

eh? Since when? Mind you, there has been someone going in (pre-renovation) whose dogs are a bloody nuisance. Perhaps it's because they are now doing food and so under hygiene regulations the landlord has no choice in the matter.

I'm fairly certain food sellers *have* to ban dogs by law

Except guide dogs of course.

I don't think its anything to do with hygiene or the law.. pub's can serve food and have dogs there.

Places that serve food aren't allowed animals on the premises.

Oh, OK. I know cafes aren't.

Maybe it is because there have been some horrid dogs in there of late. There are two old mutts that definitely have fleas with no leads that wander about in a scavengey manner and there was a macho attack dog with no lead in there once that scared me shitless. Mind you, perhaps there are some particular dog owners that need to be kept out...or maybe it's a Greene King policy.

the redo seemed OK when i was there last night, the front decking is a definite improvement. Someone had their bag stolen next to us so it's still the same old boozer!

Name me a pub in central Brixton where bags don't get nicked. Pat is sorting out a 'bagsafe' where you can check your bags in for the evening.

No dogs allowed.
That's a shame. :(
Asgard had a lovely time when we last visited The Albert, just after Christmas.
Places that serve food aren't allowed animals on the premises.
There's a pub in Islington that serves food and has dogs all over the place.
I can't find any definitive info on this.

I think the layers of dirt are what's missing. I'm delighted about the disabled access which has been a bee in my bonnet.

we didn't try it... i looked at the menu n it looked like a bit of everything.
'No smoking at the bar'.
Wtf? I dont live in Cla'am do I?
Hope the place doesn't take too long to get back to normal. What's with making the new barmaids wear uniforms now? I guess it just needs a bit of getting used to.

I still haven't recovered from Be Atwell's surprise (and I mean SURPRISE) incarnation as Sextastic Soul God Strutting his Funky Stuff all over the Albert on Saturday night. A man of many talents indeed.
You should have seen the looks on all the girls' faces. And the boys'. Fu-u-u-u-ucking hell!
A megastar in the making.

There were uniforms in Old Pat's day. She just chucked them away. I think no smoking at the bar is perfectly reasonable. I speak as someone who is both a heavy smoker and who has worked as a barmaid.

Fair enough. I'm not really a smoker myself, but my friends were a bit taken aback. There was not even standing room when I went in, so there was no option but the bar! I didn't realise that it was because of the staff that it wasn't allowed, makes sense though.

The old uniforms (different brewery then) were actually just Stella Artois T shirts. At least these ones bear the pub name. Also saves wear washing for the staff. My clothes used to stink of beer and nicotine after every shift.

Madshadow took loads of photos. Perhaps we can get him to post some up?
Not the really horrible one of my chins though -- PLEASE.

Sat outside on the deck on Saturday afternoon for half an hour and was asked for change three times and cigarettes twice (happily dealt with on a normal trip down CHL but rather annoying over a pint with an old friend), whilst a crew of gurners from 414 tried for over five minutes to persuade us that we should let them join us at our table. Think I'll be heading to the garden in future.

i hope it settles back into something approaching the old Albert after the initial excitement. all Saturday's shenanigans made it hard to assess, and hopefully aren't indicative of a new direction..

Seems a lot like its old self these days- in fact, I can hardly remember what it looked like before the refit.
Took a little getting used to but now I like the refit fine - the only thing I've got a problem with are those doors at the back with what appears to be a one-way system. It gets boring fast having to get somebody on the inside to open up the doors for you every time you want to get inside to the bar - although the door-related confusion can be entertaining viewing....:D
