According to Cardiff Underground (http://www.cardiffunderground.com/) the Toucan Club has 'closed its doors' - presumably they mean for good?

Anyone got any insider info? I haven't been there in a while.

On the topic of legendary venus closing/being reappropriated, I noticed The Vulcan is applying for a late license. No doubt being made ready for the peeps who will be occupying the new student flats*.

*nowt wrong with students like, but I reckon it's the end of Cardiff's Scuzziest Boozer.

I noticed that too - are you as sad as me and actually read the licence appplications in the Echo?

Anyway - they're going for a 1.30am licence aren't they? Hopefully a few other places will follow suit.

Nah, I read the notice on the window when I stopped in for a pint on the way home from work :)

I see.
Because all the pubs are reapplying for their licences, the classified section in the Echo is full of notices about pubs and their opening hours.

You may be right about Students though, although the Maindy on North Rd managed to stave off any kind of student colonisation, even though it was yards away from Talybont, which was home to 2,500 students  .

There may be hope yet (but if you see a sign featuring Leonard Nimoy, it's all over).

Live long and prosper.

I see it as 'research' :D

The Toucan story was in the Echo on Monday. They are looking for a new premises because the new flats above will be lived in soon and there may be complaints about noise. Seems odd to me as there are a string of bars and clubs underneath them - are they all going to close?

The owner of the Toucan said he is looking at 2-3 alternative venues for the club but it will be re-opening and they are likely to get a bit tighter on membership again.

yeah, ta
when i saw there was gonna be flats there i thought that's a bit weird with there being a load of venues underneath but was told they are student flats so it wouldn't matter.
mad place to move into just starting college that would be, in a good way :)

I thought that, bloody marvellous place to spend your student years!! Guessing only the sons & daughters of investment bankers will be able to afford it though!

The word is the Toucan management got told about the planning permission for the flats, realised what that meant for the club, got Flares and the other place to get together and have a pop at the planning permission people, bit of to-ing and fro-ing, the flats people stood to loose a seven figure sum if the permission fell through and a decent bung went the way of the Toucan, hence the Toucan is keen to be up and running elsewhere soon, seems they can afford it now.

Is it something to do with the new licensing laws then?

I think now residents can oppose late drinking, so I'm sure the toucan was far from happy when it went from having no residents to being slap bang in the middle of a few hundred flats.

I expect so, don't know the ins and outs, it's only what I heard on the grapevine. The people in the flats could have the bars closed by 8pm I think, when I was in Newquay, we had to get off a balcony at The Sailors cos the neighbours object to the noise after 8pm, don't know if that is standard? Anyway, it meant the clubs would eventually have to close so the Toucan management took it too em, prolly pulled a few strings along the way and got a tidy bung not to put a spanner in the works. Good on em, onwards and upwards.

Excellent - any idea on possile new venues?

Dunno sorry, but I'm sure they're choosing carefully, I think they leant a lesson at Scott's.

I reckon it'll be Mill Lane or the Bay.....

King Biscuit Time

A late licence somewhere cool down the bay is sorely needed - shitloads of big underused buildings there too - could be good.

8 pints of Guinness in the Packet then off to the Toucan.

Talking of license renewals, we got a letter off the 'Plasnewydd Focus team' the other day about (among other things) the Tut N Shive applying for a license extention till 12.40am - hope this happens it's a nice pub and I hate getting hurried downstairs at ten to 11.

I like the notice I got from my Focus team about the New Dock Tavern getting a later license. I'm sure they are drinking in there (behind the curtains) until it's light anyway!

Looking forward to a new Toucan anyway. Only went a few times to the last one but still had a good vibe. The first one was the best mind ;)

New Dock Tavern and Tut and Shive opening late - Surely this licencing reforms going to mean more people boozing in the suburbs and less people in town and will therefore calm things down a bit?

The only reason I'd wanna leave the Claude/Tut etc is to have another couple of drinks, now it looks like I can stay in Roath while the dickheads fight it out in town!

I used to Dj at the Toucan when it was down near the bridge. That venue had turned into an Irish pub last time I went there.

Is it still on St Mary's Street at the moment? If so, it seems crazy people are developing flats there!

I live in the centre of Nottingham at the moment above a bar. Over the last two years all the bars near me have had noise abatement orders placed on them. I can no longer hear the bass lines passing through the building because of this. But I moved here to be in the centre of things, what muppets move above bars/clubs and then complain about noise

"Luxurious fully appointed kitchens, brushed wooden floors, and through the window the sound of kebab's flying across the street at 3am every night". Sounds great!

Also mental to think people paid top dollar for the flats on Chippy Boulavade.

Your flat is opposite Colin's Adult Books and every Friday and Saturday there will be people shouting, singing and stuffing chicken curry and chips down their necks from 9pm to 5am. You'll then be re-woken by the council roadsweeper at about 9am while he does his best to clear up several 6 foot high piles of polysterene trays and newspaper.

That'll be £350,000 please - I'll take cash

When they were first advertised, there was a quote from the company selling them, saying that they had lots of interest but mainly from people not from Cardiff ;)

Can you imagine the blurb ' close to town, conveniently located near restaurants and bars, triple glazing free'.

Re the New Dock Tavern, my mate took his girlfriend in there one night a few years ago. The pub stopped and stared, the barperson opened up the backroom for them specially and made them sandwiches. ( it was that sort of special occasion :D )

I live nearby but have only been in there once. I stepped in dog shit in the toilets  Nice pint of dark though.

I thought that place would have a story to it - please elaborate!!!

Broadway's good for weird stories - the two Newsagents, D. Ash and M. Ash right opposite each other for example.

Ash bought out the shop over the road and opened it up as an Identically stocked version of their own shop. - So they now have two identical shops next door to each other, each containing indentical stock. A mate of mine went in for a chat and apparently they have no plans to sell either shop!

Apparently bumping old threads brings new cred, but I thought I'd let you know that the new Toucan is now open. I saw it last night with my very own eyes, guv, and it looks like they've made a decent stab at trying to sort out the 'Journeys: our layout can kill off any good night' problem... they've stuck the bar in the far left corner as you come through the door, and put lots of eye-catching Gaudi-esque mosaic tile patterns on the walls.

This is spam by the way, I'm actually the Toucan owner and would like to be banned. But not before you all come and give me your money. Or not. As you were ;)

Dor as she is known by runs the store and her son runs the newsagent...

Dor is not to be messed with, she looks small, but she is an alsatian
