Really good. I just wanted somewhere quiet to sit and read the paper for an hour or two, away from the family, with a drink (or three), and was prepared to pay for food in this quest....I had a seafood Paella which was excellent. Good enough to suck the Mussel shells so as not to miss a smidge. Was given a free pudding (a test recipe which was really good even though my head isn't usually turned by cake or puddings at all). It was an orange cake with white chocolate. Really rich with as much white chocolate as cake, but served with fresh raspberries which were a perfect and tart foil to the rich sweet cake, and a dollop of cream. I left sated and pretty tiddly but a very happy woman.

Who else has eaten there since it stopped being Atlantic66?

We have, and have posted positive comments. The pasta is fab, and the pizzas, and the antipasti. We like it there.

I think sonik went the other night and was quite impressed as well...

Have had some brilliant food and really bad slop. I think it depends when you go.
Too many staff on sundays, not enough during the week. Has a problem of trying to hard to be something it can be, without but with to much effort.

I think your cover was blown and they sussed that you were the U75 restaurant critic.... (would insert wink smiley here but can't for some reason).

I did indeed and it was excellent, slightly more expensive than i thought it should be £12 for house wine!!! But the food and service were great.

But they're doing cheap cocktails during the week. 2.50 i think.

would certainly reccomend the pizza, very good quality, perfect crispy base, nice tomato sauce, real mozzerella. better than most of the shitey pizza in london. as a pizza lover I have consumed them all over europe and feel that this is one of my favourites, have not tried anything else on the menu, staff are friendly enough, drinks cold, little pricey.

Waiter and cook working that day were twins from Rome so a whole conversation developed around the families theme.

Really? I went past on Sunday and saw it shut, but a mate's been dj'ing down there recently and has said nothing. Bizarrely saw the chef/owner bloke down the pub yesterday too.

Shame if it it has. It's one of those places that suffered from a bad set-up/inital design and never really recovered imo. The food was pretty good, staff frriendly and competent and the place looked better from inside, but it was never the most enticing of environments.

Both Neon and Atlantico did way better pizzas than Pangaea ime, yet haven't really taken off. With Neon I reckon the manager's a big problem, with Atlantico and they've never managed to get the feel right. It's a shame - the owner's a nice bloke and generally loves the area and his food.

Erm, he's got a good frown hasn't he?

I've just never felt particularly welcome in there; he seems to loom about like he's doing you a favour by serving you. Maybe he's just unlucky on the facial expressions front, but it's not exactly conducive to a good atmosphere.

Food good be genuinely good at times though. So much so that some Italian friends used to wax lyrical about the place and receive some excellent, authentic food from the friendly chef. I've heard other folk moan about inconsistency there, but the quality of food's never really been the main thing holding the place back imo...

I had a great pizza at Ferndales last week, 21 quid for two pizzas and a bottle of house wine. The guy who runs it is a very amiable French chap and the house red was really good, brought over by him from France. Great chilli oil too and lovely garlic bread. Recommended!

I like Neon went there when it first opened a few years ago and got very pissed :)

Has it gone downhill now then? :(

I think it's not so much the food as the proprietor...

Did? Has Neon shut down?

I walk past there everyday and haven't noticed, though that might well be evidence of me being dozy.

Sorry, that's me getting my tenses wrong and misleading people. Rennie reckons that Atlantico has shut down recently, but Neon is still going as far as I know.

Anyone eaten in there recently? I suspect that hordes of people haven't been drawn to drink cocktails in the Atlantic Road setting of Brixton's only 'martini bar and diner'..

There seem to be a distinct lack of Aston Martins parked out for a start. And I've not even seen one bloke in a tuxedo, nor any jumpsuit-clad goons, going anywhere near the place. Rubbish...

Ms T
13-02-2006, 16:27
Oh no! We were only in Atlantico the other day, and had a really nice dinner. It seemed pretty busy as well.

Are you sure it was shut for good? I know it got new opening hours recently....

rennie

indeed... i checked online and it's open for dinner 6 to 11pm Tuesday to Sunday.

I think the food's great but the manager (also the owner) has got a terrible manner about him...

Don't get me started, we live very close & the pizza can be great but I won't go there any more after two run ins with the management.

The first was when going for an early evening meal when it was totally empty and I had the temerity to ask him to turn the music down so I could hear the rest of the people at my table talk. He ignored me the first time I asked then when another member of the party asked he went behind the decks and noticably turned it up.

The second time was when ordering takeaway calzone (not willing to go for a sit down meal again), he said there was a backlog so could we wait for 45 minutes before collecting. 30 minutes later he called all arsey saying where were we, the "product" was cold and he was going to remake it, could we come and get it in 15 minutes. 15 minutes later I was subjected to an ear bashing about how he was never going to sell me another calzone takeaway again. By this time I was too hungry to engage in any dialog so I just ignored him and wandered off.

Seems repeat customers are not one of his priorities.

Never been to either Atlantico or Neon, but that Neon bloke sounds like an utter twat -- and it's not just one Urban contributor saying so either.

Sounds like he's learned his approach to PR and customer relations off steve ingenou ....;) :p

i've never been in neon cos i always thought it looked a bit wanky...but i've been tempted a few times cos people have said the food's good (esp with the tarranau seal of approval ;) ) ...but hearing all that about the owner doesn't exactly inspire confidence. It doesn't take anything to smile and be nice does it?

Apparently he managed to piss off an entire birthday party a couple of days ago and shouted them out of the restaurant telling them they should go to McDonalds instead!

That's a damn shame. Any idea what happened?

I went to a wedding (reception) there - it was great, and the staff and manager were wonderful, really added to the atmosphere. They'd even dug out an inflatable rocket full of balls for the kiddies!

Who have you heard this from? I'm gutted. I used to go there regularly for breakfast: great place to watch the world go by on a Sunday morning.

I really liked the Italian twins too (one chef, one waiter)

Does your source have any indication of what went wrong? And any ideas what might happen next? It's a nice space.

Just walked past and spoke to people doing it up - apparently not a cuzza but similar to before (hopefully more profitable).

Food was nice in Atlantico but service was always appalling and amateurish. Not surprised they went out of business as it seemed to be run along the lines of a social club for the manager's friends.

Would be a shame for it to be empty as long as the other vacant shopfront next to Ichiban.

That's apparently empty cos who ever redeveloped it cut some corners with the fire exit and didn't get council approval.

Don't know if that is true or not?
