Clifton Mansion based New Telepathics led by Darryn Harkness (Serafin) play their third, monthly set at the ritzy cafe tonight featuring 8mm and slide projections and a heady mix of rock/afro-jazz/improv and live sampling galore...

8pm Free: details below

Sat 6 Aug – New Telepathics

Lazy as it may seem, let’s start with some comparisons. Cinematic Orchestra (on speed). Morphine (if their drummer had been born in West London, not the East Coast USA). Acoustic Ladyland (with the occasional Ornette Coleman solo thrown in).

Now that’s out of the way, what are the facts? ‘New Telepathics’ is the brainchild of Darryn Harkness, brought into being with the assistance of Sandy Mill (who has worked with the likes of Gary Numan, Placebo, Basement Jaxx, Dick Johnson and Lofty and Bob Jones's East West Connection) and Tom Fielding. Together they have created a melting pot of afro-beat, soul, jazz, funk and house - similar in vibe to the West London broken beat sound or that of the Tru Thoughts/Quantic output.
Their live set is never the same, with improvisation and rhythmic complexity the key. The full line up includes 2 drum kits, 2 bass players, keyboards, horns, vocals, and a theramin. Kicking off a monthly residency at the Ritzy Café, each night will see a stripped down version of the full band, with a different selection from a pool of 10 musicians playing both existing tracks and improvised pieces depending on the given month’s line up.
Not unlike previous nights by Forestbrook or DJ Nova, their evenings include the use of slide and Super 8 projections, transforming the Ritzy Café into a melting point of sounds and sights.

Who'd report a free gig anyway.

I wish I could go to this, it sounds mental. But I've made other plans. Have fun!

Sparrow and me popped down for this - it was great! There were three guys on bass, drums&keys and alto sax. The keyboardist/drummer/singer had a little loop box that they built up a base on, and then basically jam on top of. THey were very funky and were talented musicians. Use of horse-racing commentary records as scat-like rapping goes down well with me too :)
We also got a little free booklet of beat poetry, man. Definately going back next month!

Argh!!

Ed! That's the second time you've posted details of a gig only hours beforehand! I would have gone to that!

Ach well. I spose I should keep my eye out in future. ;)

Did they play there last year? I saw something like this there a while ago. I rather enjoyed it, though it was a bit Jazz Club.

sorry for being a bit late in the day with the posting.

it was a great night but yes, they will be back - sat 3 sept.

hopefully they will stay as the band to play the first saturday of each month though this assumes that the main man behind the band can get back and forth from germany come october. fingers crossed.

they did not play last year so the jazz-club vibe band must be someone else... :)

further recommendations for the coming week..on second thoughts, here's the lot:

Weds - DJ Eric Soul's Afrogroov

Thu - Z Star
Afro-soul singer (host of two succesful Vibe Bar residencies)

Fri - Imzad
North African trio

Sat - Tsivi Sharett
Contemporary classical and jazz

Sun 14 Aug - Jonny Phillips' Sherpa Boy
Pan-global band led by F-ire guitarist (and member of Soothsayers) Jonny Phillips

that's all for now.
