View Full Version : Firewall Fun
Anyone else had this?
My pooter's been running happily for many a day with Zonealarms. Recently, I've been getting "webpage not available" messages. Zonealarms seems OK. When I switch off ZA, then I can access the internet fine. Switch ZA back on and it keeps the access.
Any ideas?

Occasionally, when NT is crumbling. ZA produces its own 404 messages. Restarting fixes it for me.
Fuck this  ZA is switched off, Windows Firewall is on. Apart from moving around U75, can't access any other websites

What happens when you try pinging them?
Looking back, "webpage not available" is not an error message I recognise. Even from IE, though my memory of that is thankfully fading.
Are you sure your ISP's Domain Name System is working?

windows->run type 'cmd'
in the box that apears type "ping www.whatever.com"

Just had the same problem again. Restart did the trick. Not sure how happy I'm going to be if I have to keep restarting though.

Thanks for that.
What should be done next if it is pingless?

Howsabout you do the next step first - what does ping news.bbc.co.uk say? - then we take the step after from there?

You could try this:
Disconnect from the internet
Shut down ZoneAlarm
Open Windows Explorer and go to {windows}\Internet Logs
Delete tvDebug.log
Restart ZA
If that fails, you can also delete {windows}\Internet Logs\{username}.ldb and/or {windows}\Internet Logs\lamdp.rdb - you'll lose all your ZA settings and need to refuse internet access permission to all programs, then grant it again when asked... no bad thing anyway.

Well, at the moment, things are working just fine. But for what its worth it says
packets sent 4,received 4 lost o
average time was 859ms
But it would, 'cos its working fine at the moment

Why do you say no bad thing?

No bad thing if you've been installing random stuff and giving it giving permission. A "forbid everything and see what really needs access" approach is a secure approach.
For example, I have denied access to ping, and grant it on a one-off basis when I know it's me originating the request.
No, not been letting random stuff access the internet. Often go and check to see what stuff is allowed to and amend as neccessary.
Recently been pinging places, and the message is "ping request could not find host www.etc"
This is while I'm happily typing here

As I suspected, your ISP's Domain Name Server = the system that translates www.urban75.net into 82.138.249.21 - has failed.
If it fails while you're connected to urban75, your browser still remembers the 82.138.249.21 so it can still reach here, but no new sites.
Usually rights itself withing the half-hour.
So nothing to get excited about then?
Just bloody annoyed
Is there some time limit, where you if you don't access the internet it switches off? And if so, how can I change it?

Yep, if you're on dialup.
