View Full Version : The Wickerman Festival
Anyone else go to this last weekend?
It was the first Scottish festival I'd been to since Fife Aid in 1988 :o and I had a wicked time. The Wickerman itself was amazing and it burned on Satuirday night. Alabama3 were wicked and the Dangleberries were the surprise package for me - a bit like Dholl Academy with kilts. Not surprisingly they rocked the crowd. Bit too much pissed singing at 6am but apart from thet I couldnt fault it. It's in Galloway which I hadnt really been to before , despite all my dads family being from around Dumfries - it's beautiful and similar enough to the Highlands for them to film The Wicker Man there. Yeah, I'll be going next year.

I went the first year -- it had an excellent vibe and really enjoyed it, the Dangleberries played then too, and I was wowed, I never thought I'd enjoy 'Drum 'n' Pipe' music -- meant to go again as I don't live too far from Dundrennan, but it's become a bit pricier £20 (2002), £45 (2005) and the transport links are shite. Farmer Gilroy's farm is hardly handy for trains/buses etc. Still, I'll try to go next year, by all accounts this year's was a good 'un. Any other highlights Pagan?
This area certainly needs more events like this.

Wickerman is a family friendly festival so don't be stuck at home with the kids - bring them too!
I'm sure Lord Summerisle would approve ;)
Lord Summerisle: We are a deeply religious people.
Sergeant Howie: Religious? With ruined churches, no ministers, no priests... and children dancing naked!
Lord Summerisle: They do love their divinity lessons.
Sergeant Howie: But they are... a-are naked!
Lord Summerisle: Well, naturally. It's much too dangerous to jump through fire with their clothes on.

Ah yes the vibrant cultural highlights of Dumfries & Galloway, don't forget the heart-racing excitement of the Penny Savings Museum in Ruthwell... still, it's marginally less depressing than the Borders with the Thimble Museum (Biggar) or the Ornamental Cornice Museum (Peebles). Like I say we need more events like the Wickerman Festival, obviously us South-of-Scotland people will become even more crazed by boredom.

Biggar's not in the Borders, it's Lanarkshire :P
And besides, the Borders has more than its fair share of fun stuff (at least in the summer). We have Traquair Fair, a Jazz and Blues Festival, several traditional music festivals, cycling and book festivals, pipe band championships, wheens of outdoor/sporting events of all sorts. Admittedly it's not all good, we currently have 6000 2CV's and their drivers in Kelso

Can't believe you mentioned Ruthwell but not the Ruthwell Cross....!
Anyway, there are quite a lot of things to see and do - from St Ninian's Cave
to Port Logan, to the world's-oldest-still-operating camera obscura (in Dumfries), to Burn's mausoleum to Sweetheart Abbey. And all the scenic countryside and that too. (Won't mention the Castle Douglas food and book town thing as that's patently nonsense. Still, Threave Castle and gardens are nice.)
Should see if I can get a job with the tourist board... ;)
i went a few years back and thoughroughly enjoyed the beat and the uk subs.
I went, but only on the saturday and had a great time. The acts during the day were a bit thin but it was enjoyable setting up camp in the acoustic tent and hearing what was thrown at you. Antiproduct were good live, despite their crap music, as their front man was a great entertainer. Alabama 3 did a great set and Arthur Brown was ace for a 62 year old. I'll go back next year if Im in the area.
yeah, agree that the acts are a bit thin during the day - we just hung out in the accoustic area or the dance tent (i like a bit of variation). OOOD were good and we saw some good ska too but can't remember the bands name. And the Wickerman itself (and the Wickerwoman that burned an hour before) were stunning!
are you mad? What about the Common Ridings. I spent a lot of my childhood in Langholm which has a great Common Riding. 300 horses galloping through the town! Pubs open at 6 am! And any festival that involves a Barley Bannock (basically a big scone) with a salt herring attatched to it by a six inch nail, solemnly paraded through town (along with a giant thistle, a crown of roses, a spade, with pipe, flute and brass bands, not to mention a kiddies parade with heather bessoms (heather on the end of a cane - like a Scottish broomstick) is ok with me!
It's this Friday btwboring? I think not! (http://homepages.enterprise.net/iainlogan/langholm/lang3.html)

The Common ridings near me are just a load of poshie horse-ownerrs, waking us civilised people up with their 'woo woo-ing' early on a Saturday morning, whilst a couple of inbred fore-lock tugging serfs politely applaud their aristocratic superiors. I was thinking of stringing piano-wire at riders neck height across the road, but I guess these 'auld traditions' (some dating as far back as to 1948, I've got stuff in my fridge that's older than that) have to be preserved........ If this is really the best the South of Scotland can offer, you can understand why I am so pleased the Wickerman Festival exists....

Don't know where you come from mate but you've obviously never been to Langholm CR.
There are only 4 true Common Ridings - Langholm, Galashiels, Lauder and Annan (I think) and Langholm's a true people's festival. The only toff in town is the guy who owns Edinburgh Woollen Mills and he built a riding stable and swimming pool and gave free entry to kids of his staff. My mate was cornet a few years back and his dads a painter and decorator and he was brought up in a council house.
edited to say, I'm not having a go at you mate, I havent been to any other CR's so I'm sure you know what you're talking about - it's your home town after all.
'Two Hundred and forty-four years ago the three owners of the Ten Merk Lands of Langholm were parties in an action in the Court of Session in Edinburgh for the delimitation of certain areas of ground in and around the town. The boundaries were duly defined, but in the award it was laid down by the court that the Burgesses of Langholm had certain legal rights and privileges, and that part of the Ten Merk Lands, particularly the Common Moss and Kilngreen, had belonged inalienably to the community. As a result of this award, it became an obligation of the Burgesses that the boundaries of the communal possessions should be clearly defined, and accordingly beacons and cairns were erected and pits were dug to indicate where the communal lands began and ended, and a man was appointed to go out each year to repair the boundary marks and to report any encroachments.'

I just found out that 4 town thing from mate from Duns. They have one but it's a mish mash of other town traditions (tar barrel racing, ba' game etc) I always thought Hawick had one through Turibus but he says no.

Swift googling reveals that Selkirk has had a Riding of the Marches since the 16th century, Langholm since at least 1800, Hawick since at least 1703, Lauder had one in the Middle Ages but it fell out of fashion until the idea was reveived in 1911, Kelso has only had one since 1937, Galashiels since 1930, Jedburgh since 1947 Melrose since 1938, Peebles since 1897. So you're both right in some respects.

Yup my user names is short for 'Ungrateful Peasant' . I try to avoid bowing and scraping to the Dukes of Buccleuch, the David Lansdales or the other ancestors of thieves and drug-dealers who claim ownership of so much of the area.
I am sure many of the Ridings in Langholm have a deeply popular history and still avoid the ghastly elitism of most rural traditions (invented and otherwise -), but the ones I've seen (Dumfries and Kirkcudbright) seem to be just arrogant poshies on horse back, yelling and blowing horns and expecting locals to applaud them for being rich enough to own a horse. The Dumfries one, up until 2 years ago, even forbade women from leading the possession, because of 'tradition' even though the 'historical spectacle' dates all the way back to the 1930s....
It's possible that there are ridings that haven't been taken over by the local worthies and are as unelitist as you say Pagan, I hope so. Maybe I'll pop over to the Langholm one....

Can't speak for all of them but I've known the Langholm, Coldstream & Hawick Ridings & they don't fit that mould at all. Although I've little doubt that quite a few will.
Also glad to see that Wickerman is still going. :) A year or two back, the organisers sounded so hacked-off with all the obstacles thrown in their way that for a while it looked as if they might give-up.
One day I'll get there!

Following on from the Wickerman Festival there is spin off related to the film, according to the Dumfries & Galloway Standard, Friday 16 September, 2005, page 39....
Film buffs are to ge a first in the region -- a free seat on an inaugral "Wicker Man" film locations tour.
The British cult horror classic has world-wide followers and Solway Heritage have organised the first locations tour as part of its Dumfries & Galloway Doors Open Day 2005.
Forty nine seats are up for grabs for the tour on Sunday September 25, which will have a professional guide and will take in Kirkcudbright, Anwoth, Creetown, Gatehouse of Fleet, Whithorn and Port Logan.
Anyone interested should send a postcard, with their details and request up to four seats asap to Jean Atkin, Solway Heritage, Campbell House, The Crichton, Bankend Road, Dumfries, DG1 4ZB.
Sadly I'm up in Glasgow that day -- but if anyone is interested and goes, I'd be interested to see what it was like.

I rode to Plockton a couple of years ago-just to see the bit from the start of the film where Edwar Woodwar(sic) landed in the plane-top place.
Meant to get to Kirdcudbright but never quite made it.

Yup at Burrow Head -- apparently there are remains of the feet there. I went on a trip to see St Ninian's cave (the site where Howie runs in with Rowan), but couldn't find the feet. The cave where Howie runs in with Rowan (thinking he's saving her) is full of crosses left by pilgrims -- 'cos its where Christianity was supposedly first introduced to Scotland (although that's some years ago now ;) ).

not posted here for bout 6 months now cos im offline and the library pc's are dead slow, but thought id make an exception and search for a wickerman thread; i cant wait, trying to get down thursday afternoon; not too concerned about the lineup as i'm mainly there for the reggae soundsystem, festival atmosphere and good crowd, burning of the wickerman itsself, getting out the city etc; and i see the amphetameanies are playing too; and t in the park looked imo a worse lineup for twice the price and a shit crowd wi too much security folk/polis, if its still like i remember it, not that i didnt enjoy it at the time;
if the weathers like this it'll be great, so warm at the moment
i'll not prob be online again before then so wont be able to meet up wi anyone, but if you see someone in their mid twenties wi dark hair (possibly shaved at the back and sides but just short on top in a kinda early 90's shabba ranks kinda thing if i get round to it) and a blue cap say hello;
saw the name velouria on the wickerman board and that made me think to check this place; good to see theyre using vbulletin as welll, shame it takes so long to load up.

From what they are saying though, it would have depended on where you were camped ... you might have been lucky ... you might not have... just depends where the scum strike :(

unfortunately 6 of our tents got ransacked during the bands on friday night.
the real pisser was that there was a kid in one of them at the time sleeping who got the fright of her life.
Really sorry to hear that mate. I didnt go this year - went to The Glade week before and off to States and Burning Man this weekend so funds a bit tight.

Had a great weekend didn't see a single urbanite though!!!
Highlight of the weekend probably vice squad. Saw the ampheatameanies and The Gift, it was pretty good to hear some Jam tunes played live. Will definitely be going next year!!!:D
