View Full Version : August London Walk!

Hollis
15-07-2005, 00:40
A delightful walk from Wood Green down to Stoke Newington, predominently through Woodlland, with fine views of North London... possibly ending up with a picnic in Clissold Park, or one of the fine pubs of Stoke Newington..

I dunnu! I suggest the 14th as a preliminary date with a perogative to change...

This walk will be cool

A delightful walk from Wood Green down to Stoke NewingtonWill it take in the (guffaw) cultural quarter?

And is the walk going to circumnavigate your own house so you don't have to wander too far afield?

Hollis

Errr.. I was planning on leaving my own house out of this.. We could of course do the walk in reverse and end up 'chez hollis'... I dunno.. :(

Sounds like good planning to me...

Reasonably close. Good bit of gentle exercise so I can work out exactly how fit I'm not before September sneaks up from behind and rapes me. Sounds like a good idea.

Can't do the 14th, I'll be in Devon ...

(you should stress to people that the 14th August is a Sunday ... ).

(take it from this suggestion that you WON'T be in Devon Hollis!! ;) )

But then I'm pretty busy all weekends of August anyway, so I should stay out of this really ... :o

I apologise for being a tad slow here, but how the hell do you go mainly through woodland when going from wood green to stokie? I mean, how many forests are in harringay?

Hollis
01-08-2005, 23:08
Err.. contrary to my earlier pronoucements on the subject, its going to take place on SATURDAY 13th August, (I meant it all along).

Meet in JD WETHERPOONS

Come out of Wood Green tube look slighty to the left and its just past the Hollywood Cinema opposite..

Meet say 1-2pm.

The walk's about 5 miles long.. and will finish somewhere in Stoke Newington - Clissold Park or the nerest pub.. there will be 1 beer stop en route. No real ale guaranteed.

One of those underrated London locations - England's green and pleasant land... was on a romantic stroll around Seven Sister's road last night - Woodberry Down Estate by moonlight - beautiful.

I could ask some questions about your possible route but I don't want to spoil the delights of norf london to everyone.

if so there is a very real change that me and missus and perhpas even a cousing to missus with girl friend shows up. since it ends around the corner from us it's dubbly convinent and if the wether don't premit a picknic i'd recomend the rose and crown, it being a dog fiendly establishment and all.

Thanks to Hollis for organising this ('tho next time we might fit him with a GPS tracker ;) )

Harpo, Groucho and I are still unsure where he took the rest of you. Did you get as far as Stokie?

Following our delayed departure from the Woodman (http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub1271.htm), we did a brisk routemarch along the whole of the rest of the Parkland Walk to Finsbury Park seeing neither sight nor sound of the avant garde. Ended up with a swift drink in the (sadly bland and real ale-less) Alexandra(???) opposite the park.

For those feeling undernourished on the fact front...

Guide to "The Northern Heights" railway lines (http://www.loveplums.co.uk/Tube/NorthernHeights1.html) - includes some bizarre pics from when the GLC used the Parkland Walk to film a propaganda film about the dangers of transporting nuclear waste by rail.

Peter Wright's pictures of the abandoned line in 1970 (http://pages.britishlibrary.net/overground/heights/)

and last but by no means least...

Cheers to Hollis and Editor for that. Must have been the wettest walk we've done! North London is Surprisingly green.

I still can't believe that Hollis thought the hill behind Canary Wharf was Epping Forest!

Hollis' facts were good. "Over there is where they play cricket by the gasworks." Points over to the gasworks where people were playing cricket.

Weather was goodly as long as you like a light drizzle. Not too hot.

Nice walk. Thanks Hollis.

Was good to meet Christo, Groucho and Harpo. (Even though I've met Groucho before but didn't know who he was on the boards). :)

Invasion of people whose usernames end in 'o'

Ta for that Hollis, sorry I had to leave half way through - was starting to get cold (didn't anticipate rain and got soaked through  ) and my poor wee knees were aching. The bit I did was great though, lovely woodlands there!

Glad everyone enjoyed it.

Even the quite staggering navigational cock-up was quite amusing in retrospect. Lang rabbie demonstrated supreme diplomacy in patiently trying to explain that I was, err, heading in exactly the wrong direction.. :o :o I obviously blame the beer..

I'm sorry I missed it too. Had friends who were meant to be coming to visit, but they didn't show til after 7pm.

You walked right by my place and even went to my local pub by the sound of it (The Fultering Fullback).

Hope I can join you for the next one. :D

I finally got my photos developed!

North London Walk (http://www.pbase.com/maggot/north_london_walk)

There's only a few, but I got that weird marching band that only me and Iemanja saw.
