View Full Version : Brazil in August
My girlfriend is successfully persuading me that we should go to Brazil in August.
Any recommendations - beaches, jungles, best part of the country for this time of year.
I had been planning a scuba-bum trip to Mexico, so am also interested to know of nice beach places with good diving.
thanks.
The books have inspired me to check out Bonito and Fernando da Noronha. They sound like lovely spots for a bit o' scuba ;-)
Good time to go as far as hotels and B&B are concerned as it is low season, all at least half price.
Though flights are expensive you will have to wait until the middle of August until they go down, expedia is quite good.
The places you mentionesd are all good for diving. Other good beach places are, Itacare (check www.Itacare.com). I which is where I live ansd have a B&B ;)
Also good for beach parties and sloshing is Arriaial Ajuda and Transcoso. All the above are south of Salvador (which is a shit hole imo).
Then there is the whole 1000´s of k´s of beaches north of Bahia....Depends how long you got. Bahia is good as you can get a flight to Salvador, Porto Seguro or Ilheus starting around 50 quid from Rio or Sao Paulo and in a couple of hours your there.

yah trancoso is cool, the only place in brazil that sells rizla which is also available in blue and king size. would also recommend floripa, especially if you're into surfing
If you want Amazon remember you have to get up beyond Manaus for the river to be interesting. I like the Brazil-Colombia border area- Tabatinga is a decent little town next to Leticia on the Colombian side, a place you can walk into without ever showing your passport. Nearby Benjamin Constant is a shithole though. The river is "only" a mile wide here and is pretty spectacular.
From Tabatinga you can do all that river stuff like watching dolphins, checking out those huge lilies, doing jungle walks etc. Dry time is July, but the weather is so fucked up at the moment August might be OK. If you're really into it you can get the boat right up to Iquitos in Peru...

Its dry season in the braslian amazon now, 30-40 degress everyday more or less, with the odd down pour. Rain season is November - May ish.

I've just booked myself a flight for September. I think I'll have some time in Rio and then go down to Foz de Iguazu to see the waterfalls...

Rio in all its exotic geography and dangerous sleazey glory and, Foz, I do not have the vocab to due it justice are both ´must sees´ ..
But if you visit the tourist sites in Rio (Christos, Pao de açucar, er Help discoteque :p etc) and then do the tour of Foz you will be very much on the tourist evelvator. I would recomend if you can do it, to go somewhere with a bit lower gringo tourist volume, to get more of a taste of what Brazil is.

OK, ideas?
This isn't my first trip, and I'll be staying with a Brazilian friend in Copacabana. I've done Pao de Açucar and Corcovado, hung out on the beaches, even been to the, Indio, Naive Art and Carmen Miranda Museums, so what next?
I'm going to try and get to the contemporary art museum in Niteroi. The main thing will be 3 days in Foz.
Oh, and le Boy is more my thing than Help.

Ok, well I am sure your friend in Copa will have some ideas on stuff around Rio State, Illha Grande is supposed to be cool.
Foz if you go for it you can see everything in a day, Braslian side, Argentian side, power boat up to some of the falls etc. Get yourself booked into the Tropical if you can get a room and afford it, its right next to some of the falls so if you are going to pass 3 days there a stunning location! The rest of the hotels can be kind of souless.
Fuck where to go Brasil it is so big, tourist wise = Rio, Pantanal, beaches of the North, Amazonia I suppose! What floats your boat on this trip?
A river trip down or up the Amazon on a local boat (expect rice and beans everyday washed down with 24hr a day Forro though..) Beach partys in Bahia etc
There are many beach towns south of Salvador which are loverly, better beaches than Rio and minus hustlers, plus many more all up the North East.
I now avoid Salvador (hustlers, dangerous), Natal (too many whores and johns), Fortaleza (same reason as Natal) Rio South Zone (see Natal and Salvador).
I like; Belo Horizonte - from there u can get the bus to Ouro Preto really interesting colonial town totally preserved but still with loads of life and safe too, Manaus and the Amazon region gernerally, most of South Bahia, Pipa, Olinda, Rio but not Copa. etc etc :D
Ooh, glad to have found this thread.
Would anyone care to contribute suggestions regarding Brasil in February?
I'll be in and around Sao Paulo for the first two weeks of the month and then...?

Rio's an amazing place, but you'd want to be able to go to the beaches. August might be a bit cold for that.

The seconed two weeks is carnaval! Depends on what you want every town in Brasil, has a series of parties some are more famous, easy to get around, safe than others.
Depends on what you want and your budget! A few options below.
Salvador
Rio
Olinda
Porto Seguro
Itacare
Ouro Preto
