View Full Version : July London walk
Unfortunately, due to work and parental commitments, I only have one weekend free in July when I can do my allotted walk. But I am free both days so am asking you lovely people to choose.
Here's a poll.
If not enough people can make that weekend I'm happy to transfer to a different month, oh Maggoty one.
Either Saturday or Sunday should be ok :)

This walk will be on my birthday weekend...any ideas where the walk will be and how gentle etc it is?
Maybe we should give walk ratings on how tough the march or gentle the stroll will be?

It's Hendo's birthday weekend as well so you two can celebrate together!
The idea is for it to be a walk around "criminal" London. Haven't yet done proper research, but I think it will take in the old site of Newgate Prison and parts of Southwark. There will be nice pubs a-plenty, and I'm hoping to fit in a practice run beforehand to make sure all runs smoothly.

I wouldn't mind coming to this, if it happens :) Either day really.
I voted Sunday, as I have to work Saturday.
I'llm leave it up to you, Ms T about whether to have it on that weekend, but the turnout looks promising.

...and a reference to Field's Prison elsewhere....
On the eighteenth of this month, July 1800, the atrocities of Governor
Aris, and his abettors, in Cold Bath Field's prison, were exposed in the
House of Commons, by Sir Francis Burdett; and on the fourteenth of August
following, the indignant populace assembled to pull down this prison,
which they very properly called the English Bastille. The conduct of Aris
was such that he was driven in disgrace from his situation, and another
more humane governor was appointed in his place, in order to tranquillize
the people, who were justly enraged almost to desperation against this
monster. What a disgrace, not only to the administration of the country,
but to the character of the age to suffer a malignant fiend to have the
control over the liberties of persons sentenced to be confined in a
prison! How much have those magistrates and sheriffs to answer for who
suffer these devils in human shape to tyrannize over and torture the
victims consigned to their custody! How necessary is it for sheriffs (high
sheriffs I mean), to visit their prisons in person, and see in what manner
their prisoners are treated! I do not mean a formal visit, when the
gaoler has notice of his coming, that he may be prepared to deceive him.
But I say it is the duty of a sheriff to go unawares, at times when he is
not expected, and then to visit the prisoners by himself, taking care
that those jacks in office, the turnkeys, do not go before him, to prepare
the prisoners, and to caution them not to make any complaints. What a
farce is kept up by the parade of visiting magistrates, who pass through a
gaol, for instance, once a month, "like a cat over a harpsichord;"
inquiring, most likely, in the presence of the gaoler or turnkey, if any
of the prisoners have any complaint to make to the magistrates! Oh what a
horrible farce is this. A planter in the West Indies may just as well
expect to hear the truth if he were to enquire of the negroes, in the
presence of their drivers, whether any of them have a complaint to make
against any of the said negro-drivers!

Liberal hokum from that Radical agitator Mr Burdett, Mrs M ;)
It is a strong proof of the healthiness of the prison, that from November 1793 to November 1807, out of 19,862 male and female prisoners, only ninety-one have died: there have been twenty-four born in the prison in the same period. There are three hundred and thirty-three cells in the prison, in which the convicts are locked up separately at night; there are also more commodious apartments for those who can afford to pay half-a-guinea per week for them.
...
The COUNTY allowance to the convicts is, for the day, one pint of water-gruel, one pound of bread, half a pound of meat, or six ounces when dressed, three times one week, and four times the next; on the intermediate days they have the broth in which their meat was boiled. All sick persons have wine, or whatever indulgence is ordered by the doctor.
The following are the regulations of the prison:
1. That the walls and ceiling shall be scraped once in the year at least.
2. That the cells shall be kept clean.
3. That they shall be supplied with fresh air by ventilators or otherwise.
4 That there shall be two rooms for the sick.
5. That a warm and cold bath, or bathing-tubs, shall be provided.
6. That this act shall be hung up in the gaol.
7. That a surgeon or apothecary shall be appointed, with a salary.
Once every year the governor is interrogated, whether the above seven regulations have been complied with.
In the first court of the prison are fixed against the wall three large boards, containing an abstract of the various acts relative to the duties of the governor and conduct of the prisoners; they are placed at a convenient height for reading.

One which is one too many at my age....that other birthday thread was started over a month early or eleven months too late by a naughty Bristolite with to much time on his hands. :)
Right -- next Sunday it is then. :)
I think it will be between 4 and 5 miles and will take in the old Marshalsea Prison in Southwark, where Charles Dickens' parents were locked up, Southwark Cathedral and the Clink, before crossing Blackfriars Bridge to do the Fleet Valley walk. Exciting landmarks include the Inns of Court, the Houses of Correction (so you lot had better watch out :p ), the intriguingly named Hockley in the Hole, and the simply gorgeous St Bartholomew's Church.
There'll be facts a-plenty!
I suggest we meet at around one o'clock. I'm going to see if I can find a pub near Borough tube -- so watch this space!

I might try and persuade a non urbanite to come along on this...she is very intrigued by you all.
Here is the definitive plan.
Meet from 12.30pm at The George on Borough High Street. It's roughly equidistant from both Borough and London Bridge tubes, on the right hand side as you walk towards the river. We will start the walk at 2pm at the very latest. The George is a 16th century coaching inn on a street which used to be lined with brothels, so a fitting start to our walk. ;)
We will end at Blackfriars tube.
