ok, looking for somewhere that does food all afternoon on sundays, somewhere nice and central as it has to be accessible from both north and south london, probably somewhere informal and pub-ish and not too pricey, rather than a restaurant-y place, and preferably somewhere we can stay and chat over a couple of pints after eating.
oh and the food has to be good :D :D ;)

anyone got any recommendations?

Downstairs at Smiths? Not massively cheap, and possibly not that convenient either, but seems to cover the other bits.

Sounds like you want a nice pub really... struggling.

I was in a similar situation last sunday... family meet up.. we were in N.London so walked down liverpool rd n ended up in the Duchess of Kent... not far from Angle tube!

Pub with a sit down/restaurant like bit... good food but it was busy n the service left to be desired. not too cheap but that was ok cos I didn't pay!

Im going to keep looking at this thread to find out more reccomendations.

My friend works at The Crown and Goose in Camden and they literally do the best sunday roast I have ever had. It's a cosy, quite vibrant pub slightly wanky but you have to forgive it for that as the food is wickid. They do huge portions, a mountain of food on a plate, but you have to pay the price for perfection. Its about 9 squid for a roast.

Incidently, the worst sunday roast I have ever had was at Man in the Moon pub in Chalk Farm, stale pees, small portions, sick fatty tasteless meat

Anyways, hope that helps, sorry bout the rambling.

kea

the man in the moon is a wetherspoons tho isn't it? that would explain it ;)

sorry to be picky people, but if i was still living in north london i'd have lots of options which are tried and tested ... the problem is that i'm coming from south london to somewhere vaguely central, and the other person i'm meeting is coming from euston (but they're happy to meet south of the river apparently)

we could just go to my local, of course, but i was quite looking forward to discovering somewhere new.

anywhere around london bridge / borough / waterloo / south bank would do ...

i was kinda hoping to discover new places, but the george or my local are the only shortlisted candidates at the moment ...

i personally want to go to the real greek on the south bank, but i've been vetoed :( so i'm trying to find a half-decent pub which is also 'nice' iykwim ...
i think it'll have to be the george ...

George is quite olde worlde innit.

Hope and Anchor? Gastropub on the Cut, opposite Taz. Or at the end of the Cut by waterloo there's the old fire station pub - it's big, at least, and moderately nice food when I ate there.

I always say this, but the ICA bar is nice, with good food that's not dear. On the other hand you have to pay to go in if you're not a member - £2 i think - and it's not at all pubby.

wasn't that keen on the ica bar last time i went tbh tho that could be cos it was a rather akward meeting with an ex ...

ah fuckit i reckon i'll make nosos trail down to peckham and we'll go to the wishing well :D or possibly east dulwich ... or maybe the george ...

Righto, sounds like you should try the Leather Exchange on Leathermarket St, Borough.
It's kind of a cross between an old man's pub and a modern bar, very nice inside (despite being located in the middle of a load of towerblocks) and has a bizarre upstairs room with sofas and chandeliers. Good food, although I've never been there on a sunday.
Oh, and you'll need a map, it's bloody hard to find!

I prefer the Market Porter on Park Street to the George, personally. Never been there on a Sunday though.

The Hope and Anchor on the Cut is fab. Doesn't look much on the outside, but the food is great. You can't book, though, and not sure if it does Sunday lunch. During the week the food is only in the evenings.

'Tis sadly shut on a sunday. Very nice food though.

I'd recommend the Lamb & Flag in Covent Garden..

Traditional Roasts you mean ? I like the Dick Turpin in Aldborough Hatch or The Eagle in Wanstead. But what I really like is SS to get her pinny on and cook the lunch for me !

my parents had a dreadful experience there while they were cat-sitting for us (when we were in paris) - they got their starters ok but the main course order just seemed to disappear into a black hole in the kitchen; they waited over an hour and ended up throwing in the towel, paid for what they'd had and went and got fish and chips instead. i wouldn't have bothered paying for the starters, if it had been me, but my parents are crap at complaining!

anyway, the P-E are clearly a bunch of incompetent rip-off fuckwits and i certainly won't be bothering to darken their doors.

Treat yourself to The Ivy, £21.50 for 3 courses and coffee and the nicest Sunday Lunch I have ever had. But you don't have to have the lunch, you can order 1 course al la carte like Shephards Pie for about a tenner.

Beautiful looking restaurant too.

It was suprisingly lacking in bullshit when I was there.

My mum was over on a visit and I took her there. I was dreading it but it was so good, I booked it for my wifes birthday.

Baltic's one of my favourite places to eat and drink in London. Tis bloody marvellous and I cant recommend it highly enough. Theres also a great boozer right next door, The Ring which has been refurbished recently and is really cosy.

I've been to both recently & they are indeed very good - but I got the impression that the Bermondsey Kitchen wasn't a particularly good option for vegetarians. I went with omnivorous friends (I'm very omnivorous myself, would probably eat the table given half a chance :o :D ) but quickly bagged the idea of a return visit with my veggie partner......

120 RMB sounds a price worth paying for a proper roast right now! I'd pay 9 quid and I'm on a chinese salary!

a place i like is the Snooty Fox in which i think is Grosvenor Avenue near Canonbury overland station. the meat is normally really nice but you dont get that many vegetables with it. quite a nice relaxed atmosphere and kid friendly.

Something different try the Czech Club in West Hampstead. Be warned its not veggie friendly last time I was there (along time ago) the sandwich board outside a few weeks ago had roast goose and roast boar on it. If they still have it used to have great imported Gambrinus.

love the wishing well, but not sure its the best for sunday lunch... we went upstairs in the edt yesterday, which was a really nice venue but rubbish food... the french place on lordship lane is nice, but a bit pricey...

if you live in peckham though, you have to try the rye (on peckham rye), best sunday lunch in south london
