'Unexpected file format' in Flash.

If you perhaps were to have a copy of Flash that, for whatever reason, gave you this message whenever you tried to open someone elses .fla file is it game over or is there a way around it that wont cost £600? Any tips gratefully recieved. I am trying to make flash games but all my books have 'example .fla's ' to work from, so its getting really difficult. does anyone know any good sites that give you chunks of action script and stuff for making these games?

What version of Flash do you have? I had this problem recently when trying to amend an agency's .fla (I had Flash MX) - I eventually had to shell out for the upgrade to Flash MX 2004.

I have MX on an extended trial.

You're probably going to have to get hold of MX 2004 then.
