he has it running on his flash drive and says it is very good, worth doing

Pretty easy really; just hunt down the latest installer-less build (theer aren't official ones any more, but you can get all sorts of unofficial stuff from here (http://www.pryan.org/mozilla/)), unzip to somewhere on a flash drive and run firefox.exe. There's prolly a command line switch to use a different profile dir than the default ~/home one as well.

You're right, it's a better idea than using the nightlies, but I'd only just heard about it here.

Depending on who you listen to, flash memory has a lifetime of about 100,000 writes before it dies. This can be mitigated somewhat by using a filesystem which spreads writes across the whole disc rather than overwriting the same sectors over and over again (although this isn't an optino with windows).
