Sorry to be a tad obsessed with this - but an inside source has via a friend of a friend given the update on the end of RMs on routes. This is a plan remember - could go either way.

ROUTE 13 8TH JULY
ROUTE 14 /22 15TH JULY
ROUTE 38 7TH OCT

AND THE VERY LAST - NOTE ITS IN SOUTH LONDON.

ROUTE 159 21ST OCTOBER

So all you nostalgists etc - mark it in the diary

How much do you think a souvenir from the last 159 would go for in the future?

ROUTE 159 21ST OCTOBER
Weeps bitter tears.....I love the 159 and if there is a 109 or a 3 I'll let them go in favour of a 159. I set off earlier to work than I need to so that I can get a 159 to work while they're still here. I believe strongly that all public transport should be accessible at all times, but I grew up with Routemasters and I'll miss them.

Will do a joint 14/22 ride. 14 from South Ken (where I work) to Putney, then the 22 back. Then the next day go to Ashton Court in a sad mood ....

159 : We need to organise an entire Urban takeover (between pubs, or after it closes :D ) of one of the last 159 RM on Friday :p the 21st of October ... :(

How about a u75 Routemaster Tribute pub crawl?

Get the 159 (or any other RM-run service) at one end, and hop off for a pint every time it passes a decent pub. I'd be up for that...

Brixton and Streatham folk should start planning now... the obsequies for the Pope are nothing compared with South Londoners' farewells to public transport.

Aux armes, citoyens!

We shall exceed the great "last tram" wake of 1951:

Maybe Ken really is deep down a fan of the RM and that's why the Streatham one is going to be the last to go :D

We have til October for the 159, and til July for the 14/22 (which may have some more decent pubs en route -- will have to do some research).

Well I'm up for it. Routemasters and good beer sounds like a nice day out. I'll probably get down to London sometime in June/July-ish anyway, so could time it to coincide.

Definitely this. It will be the last Routemaster on the entire network. Last day : Friday 21 October 2005.

Seriously - and as the instigator of this thread - why not consider hiring a 159 for a "tour" of the best bits of London.

Enquiries can be made ......

I'm going to miss the conductor on the 159 who is not only bloody good at his job, making sure old dears are properly seated before ting-tinging the bus along its way, but because of the way he always shouts ""Hold AWN tight!" too.....

What bothers me is that by taking the routemasters off, TfL have pretty much gauranteed I'll never use a bus again.
The O.M.O. buses may be easier to board, but having bad arthritis in my spine, being on a rear-engined bus with snatchy clutch and brakes makes using them (and the "hoppa" buses) a hell of sudden jerks, something that I experienced a hell of a lot less often (and then usually because another vehicle had pulled out abruptly in front of the bus) on a routemaster.

DATES FOR THE FINAL ROUTEMASTERS!

Last days for the final three routes ...

Friday 21st October : No. 13 (Golders Green Station to Aldwych)
Friday 28th October : No. 38 (Victoria Station to Clapton Pond)
AND THE LAST EVER!
Friday 9th December : No. 159 (Marble Arch to Streatham Garage).

The 21st (this Friday) is the same evening as the mini-PROD at Birkbeck (see Community Forum).
The 28th is the same evening as the planned Critical Mass (see Transport Forum).
So, in particular, keep Friday 9th December free in your diaries for an Urban last-day celebration for the last standard Routemaster route EVER!!

Passes through Brixton, which would be highly appropriate for an Urban celebration/wake ...

<edit to add> :

Above dates confirmed on this Routemaster site (http://www.routemaster.org.uk/rmnews.htm)

Recommend a read (or at leasta skim) of The Bus we loved : London's love affair with the Routemaster (London : Granta Books, 2005), by Travis Elborough** to get some kind of idea why many of us are so keen ...

The Romance of the Routemaster!! :(

**Review by Iain Sinclair here (http://books.guardian.co.uk/reviews/history/0,6121,1576917,00.html)

Next stop the British Museum?, but no more, sad innit! :(

I'm going into town next week and included the No.13 on my route, but I seem to have missed the bus. I think I'm going to change my plans and brave the tube, which I hate.

I did it - and there is a pond at Clapton.

Bitter sweet - the end of a proper route ! - Hackney to the West End via glorious Victorian London .

Loads of camera men out - including a Spanish TV crew.

God bless them for 4o years of service.

Spoke to some friends earlier who saw a convoy of No13's parading slowly down the Finchley Road on the last day. Some were working and had passengers, the rest were empty. I wish I'd known the last time I travelled on one was the the last one I travelled on.
