As I've been using a shared computer and we both use Opera I thought I'd try and get the functionality of Opera in Firefox. To my great surprise in about ten minutes I'd got it!

So far I've installed Tabbrowser Prefrences, which makes the tabs work a lot better, links to a different site open in a new tab, and the methods of changing tabs (clicking on each one, right clicking and moving the wheel etc.) haven't changed.

I installed Foxytunes cos it looked quite interesting. It's great, you can control a variety of different media players including iTunes, Musucmatch, Winamp and Sonique from within Firefox, all in the otherwise unused bottom status bar.

All in one gestures was one I had to have after getting used to Opera's mouse gestures, it emulates it perfectly, but slightly slower. It's also got a useful line when you do a gesture, and tells you what it's about to do, which is better than Opera

Disable targets for download, does what it says on the tin, stops FF opening a blank window for binary downloads.

The latest thing I have installed is stubleupon, it's a sort of tour of the web, click it and it gives you a random page suggested by another user. You can rank pages and leave comments on what your looking at. I've re-discovered so many odd parts of the web because of it.

I'd recommend all of these highly, anyone got any more?

Note: To get to the extensions go to the tools menu, go to extensions and click get more extensions. There's loads!

Adblock, definitely.

I've got loads of others, too but I can't remember what they are right now.

Flashblock's a good'un. Adblock, Tabbrowser preferences/extensions, and All- in-One Gestures seconded.

Another big fat hurray for foxytunes here. Bloody great that is.

What are these gestures about then? What do they do?

To go back a page, Press the right mouse button and pull the mouse to the left, let go. Or press RMB click LMB let go of RMB. Vice versa for forwards. You can open, close and minimise pages and a lot more. It's also very intuitive, after a very short while you realise how lacking IE is if only for that function.

Very highly recommended!

Athens users should check out the Athens toolbar (https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&version=1.0&os=Windows&category=Miscellaneous&numpg=10&id=337) because (a) it's great, and (b) I wrote it. :D

People like myself who can't live without Opera's incredible session management might also find the Session Saver (http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/sessionsaver) extension helpful too.

The Web Developer toolbar is damn good, but one I've recently found is Tamper Data (http://tamperdata.mozdev.org/) - view and edit HTTP headers on the fly. Can make debugging much less hassle, plus you get the warm gooey feeling of being a l33t h4xx0r.

Google Browser Sync is a bit broken at the moment (only just noticed). They seem to have restricted download to the US only, even though the old installed version sees the update and tries to install it.

Why it would be restricted to the US only, I cannot imagine....

My extensions are as follows:-

NoScript
Adblock
Adblock filterset Updater
Wiss Newsreader
Colourful tabs
Customize Google
ReminderFox
Dictionary tooltip
Bookmark backup
Search Engine ordering
Stumbleupon
Smiley Extra http://toastytech.com/evil/bwar2.gif

I used to have Spellbound as mentioned by Editor but lost it when my computer crashed. Now it seems to have been discontinued and that Firefox no longer has a spell checker although I have searched long and hard for one

be really careful with extensions they can be full of bugs and hog the memory - just use the ones that you really really need and that are tried and tested

I have found an updated version of Spellbound here (http://www.errorik.com/archive/b92zcy/SpellBound-in-Firefox-1.5.htm)

Don't forget to install a dictionary from the same source. As for bugs, you can check up on the Mozilla site to find feedback from users. I like Firefox a lot. (I have just added the word Firefox to the personal dictionary)

FEBE (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109). Backs up stuff (including extensions).

Just had an upgrade which went horribly wrong and thought I'd have to fresh install windows (again) just the manshape hunted down all the extensions he likes. Got FEBE sorted and meanwhile fixed the computer problem anyway. breathing easy again. Um so. Yes. that one.

I'd like to add my voice of praise to Stumble upon, which is truly great, and has increased my enjoyment of the web no end.

Now I can just stumble videos for ages watching no end of recommended clips based on my preferences!!

I've had to block traffic coming from Stumbleupon to my website (something that proved more difficult than you might think) - within a matter of 3 days a couple of months ago it threatened to eat up my entire month's bandwidth. I know, I know, who doesn't like more visitors - but they weren't productive visitors, just stumblers (which is fine). I can't afford at this time to up my bandwidth for them though. A great way to pass time though and find new stuff, I agree.

I far prefer Camino to Firefox on the Mac for the speed etc. However, no bugger writes extentions for it, so I miss out on all the lovely ones I use through Greasemonkey for Flickr.

You might try Greasemonkey - it uses AJAX to allow for all manner of handy little addons in Firefox, and if you also happen you use Flickr it makes your use hugely customisable.

Try either Safari 3.0 or the Firefox 3.0 beta. Both are a lot faster than their predecessors...

Does the new Firefox beta make things look lovely like with Safari/Camino? Like round blue buttons and smooth drop-down menus etc? I'm rather fond of all that you see.

Yes, it uses native os x widgets. Extension support is poor but that's because its a beta and should improve after the release...

stumbleupon is destroying my sleep.

:(

Did you know if you use it for hours on end, it pops up an image of an electronic road sign saying 'Too much stumbling can cause insomnia'

I discovered that after a coke fuelled stumble session that lasted the entire night...

Foxmarks if you use more than one computer. Syncs all your bookmarks across all the computers and will stop you losing them.
