Not many that I can think of on the Bank itself.
Azzuro (I think) is pretty consistant, large Italian place near the Waterloo entrance.
You could wander over the Hungerford bridge to Gordons - basic fodder but great wine, and very atmosperic.
I'd probably head over to the Cut. There's a fine Spanish Tapas place near the Old Vic (actually the food in the Vic basement bar was ok too), and if you walk up to the other end there's the Anchor & Hope - top notch gastropub stuff, and not really that pricey. The Indian place opposite is highly-rated but I haven't been there yet.

For the no surprises option, Pizza Express at The White House in Belvedere Road.

Tas (http://www.tasrestaurant.com/find_us.asp?sd=2&ID=2) - Turkish restaurant on The Cut is probably the cheapest place within reasonable walking distance of the National Theatre (shortcut down Cornwall Road). They have another branch, EV, recently opened practically underneath Waterloo East, but I'm told that is a bit more upscale. NB: Think The Cut branch has gone non-smoking.

The King's Arms in Roupell Street serves filling Thai Food in their back room (the pub gets very busy Thursday/Friday nights)

Don't make the mistake of going in the Cuban place on Lower Marsh to eat.

There's a Chinese-run all-day-breakfast + Thai food café on Lower Marsh, it isn't the best food, but big portions for £3-4, and a choice between full english and green curry is something I've never seen anywhere else. Full meal for the same as a sandwich and bottle of water in Waterloo...

Yup tas is ace but don't bother with the one down the cut go the the fella by the globe theatre. My only grumble with it, is the seats are way too short.

EV under the arches is run by the same folk as Tas. Went there a month or so ago. Nice food, excellent service. Didn't notice the prices being more expensive than Tas - though have only eaten in Tas a couple of times so not best placed to judge.

Just round the corner from the Kings Arms, on the Cut itself, they also have a slightly cheaper basic Thai menu at the Windmill - £4.75 for green curry and rice for example. More of a lunchtime place though as it seems impossible to get a seat in the evening - v.v.popular.

Silka, on Waterloo Bridge Rd near the junction with the Cut, does a cheap evening offer til @ 7.30 I think. Not sure how much it costs now though, poss @ £7.50 for a three course meal from a fixed menu. Think they've extended this to lunchtimes too.

I've tried the Japanese place on Lower Marsh St recently - the dish I had was pretty good. Not the cheapest of the cheap but hardly expensive either. Worth checking out.

I'll second that, Tas is excellent and very reasonable. My Mum works in the area so I often meet her there.

When I went to the Japanese place on Lower Marsh it was alright, not bad food, not particularly cheap or expensive.

bumped! anyone got any other suggestions? am looking for somewhere to go avec parents on friday. i was considering the tapas place but found some really bad reviews of it online - ditto the anchor and hope, plus its policy of not giving you a table til everyone's turned up would be a real pain for us.

we've been to tas about 5 times so we want something different!

anyone?

Sorry it's a bit late, but Baltic is about 1 min around the corner from Anchor and Hope and is fantastic, tho not cheap but not really crazily expenisve though.

There are now branches of Giraffe, Strada and Wagamama underneath the Royal Festival Hall on the "Festival Riverside" river frontage that has replaced the old service road under the walkway. From my vantage point of Hungerford Bridge, they all seem to be getting full early if it's a nice evening.

The restaurant/cafe/bar (Festival Square Cafe???) around the back of the Festival Hall has become more of a bar with food and wasn't too crowded when I dropped in to meet up with folk last week. No longer waited service - you have to order at the bar and get a radio controlled wotsit that flashes when your order is ready. Some of the platters of a selection of small dishes to share to share are better value than starters + mains. Fellow diners ranged from 20something to 60something.

Edited to add: this should have posted 30 mins ago, but office web connection died!

Baltic's food is stupendous, but the front bar gets ridiculously busy and very noisy on Friday nights.

I think the eating bit would still be fine though, it's pretty massive and feels seperate... i want to go again now!
