View Full Version : Flash Versions Compatability
I was working on a file on a mac at college, which I believe to be Flash MX Professional (not sure if its 2004 or not).
I've tried to transfer this file to my PC, which has Flash MX Professional 2004 on.
Its a .fla extention. When I try to open it on the PC I get 'Unexpected file format'.
How strange.
Posted the file up here
http://www.unknownbeings.co.uk/tom/car1.fla
i dont think there is anything on the stage, all there should be in here is a static movie clip in the internal library called 'car' or somthing.
Any ideas?
Cheers.
I may be wrong, but i think it's because Macs don't have file extensions (or at least they don't display them actively).
Probably the cross-system thing getting in the way again.
::EDIT::
In actual fact, I don't think it's to do with the Mac not displaying filenames - I've had this problem before when transferring stuff from Uni too...
Can't for the life of me remember how we got round it now...it was 2 years ago...

You can generally save files on a Mac without file extensions, it reads the file type from metadata, but they just need renaming in that case, and you'd notice it when you transferred them.
Sounds odd to me, like a version incompatibility. Don't have Flash here so I can't check unfortunately.
I just checked it on my copy and I get the same error message... :(

Seems to be a valid flash file (just rename it .swf if you're on windows) but the movie that's meant to be in it isn't there.

just checked it on Flash MX 2004 (PC version) and Flash MX (mac version/OSX) and the file won't open, so I'd say it's corrupted - have you got a copy still on your college mac?

edit:
on a mac you can use file > 'open as library' without getting error messages, but the library (where you car should be) is empty
on a PC, file > import > open external library gives the same error message as opening the .fla directly.
Definitely looks like a corrupt .fla to me. :(
