You know the Tories are in trouble when they're trying to big up John Major

Discussion in 'UK politics, current affairs and news' started by Quartz, Aug 7, 2012.

Apparently John Major is the unsung hero of the Olympics because he founded the National Lottery. Umm... no mention of the Lottery Commission who decided to fund all those sports?
  2. butchersapron 8 sails, 50 cannons

The Lottery Commission don't choose to fund these sports, the govt ran National Lottery Distribution Fund does.

    Poor John Major.

I feel so sorry for him.

    Such a nice man.

Sorry, wrong term, but right thought:

  5. audiotech wav, aiff, mp3, ogg

Chairman of Carlyle Europe [Carlyle Group] from 2001 - 2004.
  6. Idris2002 It's a mighty long way down rock n'roll

And not only that, he was present at the Carlyle group's New York meeting on the fateful morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

I think the question we should be asking now is - John Major: lizard or hologram?
  7. Santino lovelier than lovely

Compared to the current shower, John Major is fucking Disraeli.

  8. rioted redundant

John Major is probably the best prime minister in my political life. Probably the most left-wing too. ;)

Mostly he didn't do much, cones and Edwina Curry not withstanding. Near perfect. :)

Perhaps you've forgotten the exit from the ERM and the house price collapse?

Wait... yes, even considering that, you're right.
  10. _angel_ I'll soon be gone now....

Cones hotline is all I remember about John Major.
As for the Edwina Curry thing, that actually makes me feel sorry for him.

    Pah, once a front-wheel skid, always a front-wheel skid!
  15. bi0boy .

I mainly remember these two gems of his:

"Society needs to condemn a little more and understand a little less"

"New Age travellers? Not in this age! Not in any age!"
  16. Bahnhof Strasse wax weasel

Edwina Curry was talking about her time with Major, "He was the perfect gentleman, always sat at the tap end of the bath..."

    *mind bleach please.

Not for the unemployed, he wasn't, he brought in the Job Seeker's Allowance(JSA) which has brutal conditionality, always amazed when people endorse him, even in a small way....

now there is some slashfic I did not want to imagine
  24. Santino lovelier than lovely

The first ever slashfic was Gladstone/Disraeli and appeared in the letters page of The Times.
  25. rioted redundant

Saying he was the best of a very very bad bunch is not an endorsement. :) As it happens, I was unemployed for a spell under Major, as I was under Thatcher, Blair and Brown. I still say he was better than any of those fuckers.

As far as nationalisation goes, I thought he finished the Privatisation of British Rail, initiated by Thatcher. (Incidentally, Thatcher created more comprehensive schools than any other Education Secretary. But I don't think she deserves credit for that) I would be surprised if he farmed out as much as his "Labour" successors.
  26. davesgcr Reading books

Thatcher was neutral on rail privatisation - dear John thought he could happily re-create the ethos of the Great Western Railway , - green steam trains thundering through a placid English countryside with maidens nearby cycling through the mist to Evensong. Etc.....

Misled , me thinks, by the Treasury policy team looking for a challenge. (so says Christian Wolmer anyway)
