    :D

A few years ago - when I ran Vic's Cabaret Corner at the Windmill; was, during my weekly Radio London slot, referred to as the Bard of Brixton; and was once called "world famous in Brixton" - I reckon I could have laid claim to being more "Brixton" than most people. However, my star appears to have waned.....

    :(
  3. LOL! Immigration Control Platform member; Aine Ni Chonnaill once complained to me that "Dublin is getting like downtown Lagos, or Brixton". Both of which she'd never been to, naturally. Horrible cow.

Plus - now I think of it - I penned "I'm more Brixton than you".

<goes off to find it - more later>

    i'm more brixton than you

whether south west nine or south west two
    one thing is irrefutably true
    i can't use tact
    so face the fact:
    i'm more brixton than you

i put yuppies under verbal attack
some of my friends are even black
    i'm living proof
    of an essential truth
    i'm real brixton - you're an act

i keep the brixton spirit alive
without my cred you'd never survive
    i knew the edi-TOR
    even before
i'd ever been on urban 75

    coz i'm class A and you're plan B
i'm so cooltan wild and free
    while understand
    on the other hand
    you lack "edge" and "vibrancy"

and when it comes to the whys and the wherefores
i'm with the crew not the meeja whores
    and one more thing
    worth mentioning
i bet my mortgage is less than yours

    coz i'm mean street - you're avenue
and mr. fake here's what to do
    get outta my face
    i rest my case
    coz i'm more brixton
    i'm soooo brixton
    i'm more brixton than you

    Just done a check:-

"The streets are fine in SW9" (celebration of Brixton) written 1998.

"This area will not be poncified" (frivolous examination of the g-word in the style of Gil Scott-Heron) written 2003.

"I'm more Brixton than you" (a lighthearted piece in the style of this thread, see above) written 2006 - so not stretching it too much to call it "a few" years ago.

You'll remember "streets" more than "I'm more Brixton" because I've performed it much more often.

Yeah, recognised the style of the "I'm more Brixton" in that it all seemed familiar, but SW9 is definitely the one I remember. It's possible I may not have even seen you do the 2006 one and just got confused and thought a few verses were missing!

Out of interest, did you ever play the Comedy Pit at the George IV?

i could have sworn you were doing 'i'm more brixton' in the early days of offline, as that's when i thought i remembered it from. i thought i remembered it from offline's first stint at the dogstar (2004-2005), rather than the jamm years (2006 onwards...)

how does the streets are fine go...i don't remember that one.

Reckon you need to do a bit of updating, what with the Brixton Village mob and all that lot descending upon us.
  20. Minnie_the_Minx

    Minnie_the_Minx purves grundy - definitely a bloke

I don't think so as I remember being jokingly disgruntled about him harping on about SW9 when he was performing in SW2.:D I may have even mentioned it to Vic
  21. Minnie_the_Minx

    Minnie_the_Minx purves grundy - definitely a bloke

    What rhymes with Village?

    Pillage?

Maybe it ought to have a different postcode altogether
  22. Minnie_the_Minx

Streets are fine in SW9 or something like that... :D

I remember seeing "I'm more Brixton than you" being performed at an Offline in the Dogstar very clearly. It was my first Offline and I didn't really know anyone although I recognised some people.

Hang on. Does he live in SW9 (proper Brixton) or SW2 (faux Brixton)?

When I lived in Stockwell (on the site of the old village green, no less) I was an SW9, whereas now I live in Brixton (just across the road from the town hall, in fact) I am an SW2.
