self immolation - birmingham job centre

"A man has set himself on fire outside of a Birmingham job centre after what reports suggest was a dispute over benefit payments."

Not at all clear what has happened to lead to this event.

Best guess right now is that the person had payments delayed or problems with being able to sign on, rather than having been sanctioned. If that's the case then the cuts to job centre staff and funding for CAB etc. must have played a large part in this.

Sadly, we're likely to see more of this sort of thing and not just in Jobcentres either. Council offices and Housing Associations (which charge extortionate rents, while their CEO's rake in 6-figure salaries + bonuses) could be the next venues.
