How long does google cache last for?

If a web page is taken down, how long do you go on being able to access it via google cache? And if the answer is "ages", is it possible for it to be removed on request?

I remember a certain stalinist poster who password protected his pbase account after we found out who he was but google kept a record or allowed access somehow so his holiday snaps were there all to see.
