It was regarded as the second most prestigious cup in Europe after the European cup so yes it is the equivalent of the Uefa cup today.

I was under the impression it was the "least prestigious" cup, which is why they got rid of it when fixing the system for the big clubs.

There is no modern day equivelent. it was merged with the uefa cup tho

Nothing to do with the Cup Winners Cup. The Uefa Cup was previously known as the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Changed name in the early 70s.

Now it's going to be called the UEFA Europa League. Good luck in it.
