Are you insane??!! I nearly got blown into traffic crossing at a green man earlier, not to mention the biting cold gale-force wind and the hail.
I almost got blown off my feet just there. That's the first time that's happened to me, and it's a scary sensation.
Holy fucksticks. I've had a 100mph gust up the Cairngorms (ooh er missus) with a fellow urbanite. We almost did ourselves a mischief.
I know. But what it looks like is some random bit of turbine has gone up in flames exploded off the turbine and boomeranged back again. That doesn't seem very likely.
Looks like the coils in the generator part of the housing overheated & burned. IIRC (vague) some of the larger ones do use potentially flammable coolants
http://www.clickgreen.org.uk/news/n...n-flames-as-165mph-winds-strike-scotland.html I think it's a perspective thing.
I think the most serious indicator of winter yet is that a lot of the "cool" young girls who populate Union Square after school seem to have augmented their de-facto uniform of short shorts and t-shirts with a pair of tights and even the odd wooly hat!
The next street to us has its power out. From what I can gather, the black out starts there and covers most of the south side of the town. They're being told it won't be back on until at least tomorrow evening.
Well it's not a 30MW turbine for one thing, because that doesn't exist amd if it did it would be collossal. It's likely to be a 2MW geared turbine. Fires in geared turbines aren't unknown and have been recorded before. Part of the reason there's been a big movement towards direct-drive machines for offshore models.
Just heard on the news that 50,000 or so houses are without power and snow blizzards may be on the way - not good, keep safe you all On a more positive note Aberdeen's wind blown big red bauble Christmas decorations were also featured
I think it needs to be at least -10 before that becomes socially acceptable. I remember seeing women out in wee mini dresses and heels when it was -15- -18 last winter.
